Family engagement is key to student success.
One of the most powerful things you can do as an Adapted P.E. teacher? Connect with families early and often. When families understand what Adapted P.E. is—and how it supports their child—they’re more likely to be engaged, supportive, and involved.
In this post, I’ll share how I introduce myself to families, explain the purpose of Adapted Physical Education in a clear, friendly way, and create an open line of communication from the very first week of school.
🧑🏫 Why Family Communication Matters in Adapted PE
Adapted P.E. can feel unfamiliar or confusing to families—especially if their child is new to receiving services. By reaching out early and in plain language, you build trust and help families see the value in what you do.
Bonus: it also sets you apart as a professional who is proactive, collaborative, and focused on their child’s well-being.
💬 Simple Tips for Family Communication
1. Keep Messages Short, Positive, and Jargon-Free
Avoid acronyms or complex terms. Instead of saying “motor planning and gross motor integration,” try:
“We work on strength, balance, and movement skills to help your child feel confident and successful in physical activity.”
Keep the tone upbeat and focus on what their child can do and how you're supporting them.
2. Send a Friendly Welcome Letter
At the start of the year, I send a short letter introducing myself, what Adapted P.E. is, and what families can expect. I include my contact information, a photo of me if possible, and a few fun facts to make it personal.
💡 Tip: Include a line inviting families to share anything they want you to know about their child.
3. Invite Input and Questions
Let families know they’re welcome to reach out. Ask them:
What motivates their child?
What are their goals for P.E. this year?
What sensory or communication tools work well at home?
This not only gives you valuable insight—it also reinforces that you’re on the same team.
