Got Questions About Adapted PE? You’re Not Alone!

Adapted Physical Education comes with a unique set of challenges—and every teacher, no matter how experienced, has questions. That’s why I’ve started a monthly Q&A series to tackle real-world concerns from real APE teachers just like you.

Each month, I answer the questions you send in about routines, equipment, collaboration, classroom setup, and more. If you're navigating shared spaces, limited resources, or just trying to figure out what works best for your students—this series is for you.

Here’s a quick look at this month’s most popular questions and my go-to strategies.

💬 Q&A Adapted PE Highlights: August Edition

“What if I don’t have a gym or dedicated space?”

You’re not alone—many of us teach in hallways, cafeterias, classrooms, or outdoors. Focus on creating portable routines and mobile stations that rely on low-equipment, high-engagement activities.

💡Tip: Use masking tape, cones, or rubber dots to define zones and movement paths. Keep activities consistent so students know what to expect, regardless of location.

“How do I organize equipment and staff roles?”

The smoother your setup, the calmer your class. Use rolling carts or labeled bins to organize equipment by type or unit. Assign paraprofessionals to specific stations or transitions, and post a visual “Team Roles” chart for reference.

💡Tip: Invite paras to help set up or choose activities—they often know students’ needs better than anyone.

“What’s the secret to routines that actually stick?”

Consistency and visuals. Start with a simple, repeatable class format (e.g., greeting, warm-up, skill activity, cool-down) and pair it with a visual schedule. Reinforce routines with modeling, praise, and repetition—not just verbal reminders.

💡Tip: Involve students in the routine. Assign helpers for schedule cards or warm-up leadership to boost buy-in.
