Quick Routines to Start Every Adapted PE Class

Help students feel safe, calm, and ready to move.

Routines are the backbone of an effective Adapted Physical Education class. Whether you’re working with students on the Autism spectrum, those with anxiety, or kids who just thrive on predictability, how you start class sets the tone for everything that follows.

In this post, I’m sharing my go-to start-of-class routines that help students transition smoothly, regulate their energy, and get in the zone for movement and learning.

🎯 Why Routines Matter in Adapted PE

Consistency builds comfort. When students know what to expect, they’re more likely to participate confidently, follow directions, and stay regulated. Routines also make things easier for paraprofessionals and support staff, who rely on structure just as much as the students.

Bonus: strong routines = fewer behavior issues and smoother transitions!

✅ My Favorite Start-of-Class Routines

1. Entry & Greeting Rituals

Start each class with a familiar and welcoming routine. Whether it’s a personalized greeting, a handshake, a wave, or a visual check-in board, this first moment helps students feel seen, safe, and ready.

💡 Tip: Use a visual choice board for greetings (high five, fist bump, wave, smile) to build autonomy while reinforcing social interaction.

2. Consistent Warm-Ups

Use the same 3–5 warm-up activities every week. Familiar movements (like jumping jacks, animal walks, yoga poses, or follow-the-leader stretches) reduce anxiety and create a sense of rhythm.

💡 Tip: Add music! Play a favorite song from your P.E. Warm-Up Spotify Playlist to cue students that class is starting and create a fun, calming vibe.

3. Visual Routine Chart

Post a simple visual schedule at the front of your space. Whether it’s on a board, a binder, or a portable clipboard, this helps all students (and staff) understand the plan.

💡 Tip: Include symbols for “greeting,” “warm-up,” “main activity,” “cool-down,” and “exit.” Some students benefit from moving a Velcro piece from “To Do” to “Done” after each phase.

🧘‍♂️ Bonus: End-of-Class Cool-Down Rituals

Don’t forget the importance of closure. A short breathing activity, a “favorite moment” share-out, or a stretch-and-sing routine helps students leave class regulated and proud.
